Butter vs Shortening

Sadly...
I am out of shortening....
and I love shortening...
at least in pie crusts.

Thinking that I did not want to spend $7 on a large container of Crisco....I decided to try to make a pie crust out of butter instead....

Wrap dough chill in frig 1 hour
Sandwich between 2 pieces of cling wrap and roll out
Place in pie plate
and crimp edges
Chill pie crust for 30 minutes
Now....if you are like me...you save your CLEAN but previously used foil....for some reason this irritates my husband......my handsome husband likes to refer to my foil collection as my "inherited foil collection that has been passed down from many generations"....
But look.....if you just roll it out ...it's like new again....
honestly, I don't understand why he complains....after all I AM SAVING HIM MONEY!
Does he not understand that by me reusing foil we can spend his hard earned money on other things like....I don't know...hmm let me think...travel......

re using foil over and over again = historic Scottish monument....it's a no brainer if you ask me.
brush softened butter over ANOTHER piece of foil

Because I don't have pie weights I have to use beans
Bake for 25 minutes take off beans and bake again for another 15 minutes
save foil to reuse AGAIN...and save the beans too.....
Here is the butter pie crust.....
personally... I think it tastes like cardboard.....
Anyone want to trade some peach butter for some Crisco shortening?

  1. Sounds like the pie crust needed some extra salt. Next time try adding a dash or more of cinnamon to the flour before mixing in the butter. I myself use lard instead of shortening and it makes a real nice flaky crust.
Kudos for saving the foil and using beans for pie weights.

I LOVE comments BUT if you know who we are...due to the fact that we are currently enrolled in the international witness relocation program because of a moon shining incident in Dingle, Ireland involving 3 Mutton, a pair of red shoes and a road flare .... please do not reveal our personal information.... You know.... like names, places, or our favorite brand of toilet paper :) Hey, thanks!
