A day in the life of Mavis...

Today started off like any other day around here...

Well... any WINTER day that is...

because in the summer time I actually have

REAL WORK TO DO...

like growing food, canning food, drying food...

you know... important stuff.

But this time of year I have to find alternative ways to keep busy...

or else I'll wind up in the loony bin, wine bar, or nail salon,

like all the other housewives around here.

So what's a frugal girl to do?

********
First stop... Home Depot...

Now you tell me... who on earth would pay
$50 for a Christmas tree?

Instead I purchased some lead free solder for an upcoming project...

Then I headed to my favorite shop in town....

Goodwill

Or... you may know it by another name...

"Rest Home for Unwanted Dolls..."

Would you look at all these dolls...

Such a variety... and from all walks of life...

I bet Little Miss Prissy Pants in her riding uniform never thought she'd end up here... what with her perfect skin and matching polo outfit... it's a good thing the girls from the stable can't see her now...

Ohh.... a glass frog...

I have a weak spot for flower frogs... and for .99 cents... I'll take 'em both.

Ahhh... now this would be perfect... if I was Russian...
and needed a cake topper for my wedding cake.

Now here's a great gift idea... get four of these fountain glasses, a 2 liter bottle of Root Beer and a quart of homemade vanilla ice cream and you have the perfect gift for the Root Beer lover in your life...

New shoes for MamaJJ...

Okay... see this pink crystal flower thing... believe it or not this is what I came looking for today... and I found it for .49 cents... yippee... tomorrow I will show you what I made with it.

And of course... I have to try on the dresses... it looks like they got a new shipment of once used prom dresses in... I still haven't found my June Clever dress yet... I'm still looking for that one.

Would you get a look at this beauty....
I LOVED THIS DRESS...
and if I didn't already have my Christmas dress I would of bought this one...
I must of stood in the dressing room trying to figure out "when would I ever wear this?"
... for like 10 minutes. The only thing I could think of was possibly Valentine's Day at Panera...

I loved this dress... but I couldn't justify spending $24.99...
to frivolous... even if I could wear Ugg boots with it.
But for $5.99 I found this...
not only does it go great with Ugg boots...
It's roomy....
As in... take me to the nearest buffet...
I'll get my money's worth out of this thing...

And then I was off to sell junk food to school kids...
I volunteer at my kids school...
selling "healthy snacks" at the student store.
Apparently the PTA thinks corn nuts and cheez-it's are healthy...
But I'm not there to preach the pitfalls of corn syrup...

I'm there to hang out with the kids... and talk to them...
you know... put in my volunteer hours in a meaningful way... I mean really... who wants to help kids with their math or help them with their reading skills when you can hang out and be the one who sells them corn syrup and ask them questions like... "Suzie, did a dog eat your shoes?... are you borrowing someone's shoes today? Do you need me to call your Mother and have her bring you shoes that fit?"... "No... these are my shoes... this is the style... all the cool kids are wearing them this way." OHHH... Okay... have a nice day... and don't forget your tic tacs...

Then I went back home....

and ate 3 of them... and now I feel sick...

But lucky for me...
when the girl who thinks she's a bird came home...
she had an early Christmas present for me...
Oh joy... a ceramic shoe...
just what I've always wanted...
"I know just what I'm going to do with it honey..."
thanks...

I could use it as a candy dish????

Maybe as a tea bag holder?

How about as a soap dish???

Wait... you know who could really use this?
Dad...
I think he might need another one for his drawer...

  1. Love the red dress!!! And, I seem to recall a certain girl named Mavis needing A shoe (one to match either of the mismatched shoes she made it to school in) delivered to her at school one day!! And yes, why would you pay $50 for that little tree when you can have a big beautiful fake tree for free!

  2. Leopard girl... I almost forgot about the shoe incident... So many of those High School memories are blocked out... thanks for reminding me :) And YES... thank you for the $300 fake...yet free... Christmas tree you gave me... personally I think I did you a favor... you shouldn't be trying to sell stuff on Craig's List anyway... too many perverts!

  3. Mavis,
    1) You look darling in all the dresses. You really must start wearing prom dresses every day- to home depot, your kids' school, on walks. You look so great in them!

    2) You should become JJ's personal shopper. Excellent choice.

    3) Speaking of Christmas tree prices, we bought our artificial one from Target three years ago for $3.82. It was the floor model, on after-Christmas sale, 50% off and they forgot to take two ornaments off.

    4) Jamey made me lemon bars yesterday (wink, wink) and they are DIVINE. Enjoy your tarts.

    5) Please don't go so long in between writing. I missed you.

  4. MamaJJ... you know I'm only trying on dresses so I will have something to wear to Dr. Perfection's party next summer... I can't wait to see what kind of shoes she will be passing out :)

Thyhand...now that you mention it... I COULD wear the prom dresses out in public... good idea! That could add a whole new dimension to the blog! And the lemon bar recipe was AWESOME! That was the first time I had ever made them from scratch...yumm-a-licious! I even hid the extras way down deep in the freezer... so nobody would find them :)

  5. I remember the shoe incident because I had to get up from a sound sleep so as to not be left at home alone to take the shoe to you!
And, I picked up Rita's xmas cards for her today and was buying candy for the people at work.. got a $5 coupon because of the cards so only spent $4 on $9 worth of candy @ Walgreens :)

  7. Leopard Girl... you are turning into a lean-mean-frugal-machine... I can't see what you do with all the money you get back when you return all your clothes this year :0

Camille...you are welcome :) And if you click on the word lemon tarts (above) it will take you to the recipe on smitten kitchen.

  8. Mavis - you are a nut. I would have been dead after a day like that. I think the off gardening season is best spent recovering from the on gardening season. Think you should have shelled out for that last dress. It looked great on you.

I LOVE comments BUT if you know who we are...due to the fact that we are currently enrolled in the international witness relocation program because of a moon shining incident in Dingle, Ireland involving 3 Mutton, a pair of red shoes and a road flare .... please do not reveal our personal information.... You know.... like names, places, or our favorite brand of toilet paper :) Hey, thanks!
