Crazy Mavis and her weekend photo's...

The girl who thinks she's a bird and I moved the chickens to their new home...
this week they are taking up residence in the future potato patch...

I believe the hens look forward to their weekly move...
As soon as we set the uber trendy Eglu down... they come running...
I have no idea why they don't run for their freedom...maybe they enjoy the confines of their space...they just cannot wait to settle in and start scratching...

It looks like it will take the girls 4 weeks to fertilize this area... then come the first of April I will be planting this very stylish (I'm joking) area with potato's ...

And with the girls big move over to the potato patch... all 14 of my raised garden beds have been fertilized...ala chicken power...
Why use chemicals... or Miracle Grow...when you can have the chickens do the work for you... plus... they lay eggs... and eat leftover scraps... I think chickens really are the best household pet anyone could ask for...and if they don't behave... well....

Hey look... More garlic is sprouting up...

After reading about the couple from Spokane, Wa who are hoping to pay for their wedding via aluminum cans... I decided to have monkey boy crush a bunch that have been in the garage since last summers big Chicken Bbq... Hmmm... I wonder if I could pay for a trip to Italy using "can money"... what do you think? Do you think I could collect that many cans? I bet I can... I called up the local recyclers and cans are going for .52 cents a lb... holy cow... at that rate... I only need to collect 8,000lbs of cans...Hey, I think I might be on to something...

Note to self: when the neighbors put out their recycling bins next week... dress in black, strap on the head lamp and see how many cans I can come home with... Double note to self: do this after the handsome husband goes to bed 1. because if he finds out he will freak out...and 2. I may need him to bail me out of jail if I get caught... Note to self #3 Do not liberate said cans from the cranky neighbor who is always calling the HOA on me... this will just be another thing in my "disruptive neighbor file."

Oh hey... do you remember me telling you that spring is over? OH YES IT IS... I set up my supper cheesy pop up green house in one of the raised garden beds... I planted Kale seeds this week (indoors) and will try and set them outside in a few weeks...

I'm really hoping I can beat last years total of 1,037 lbs of garden goodness grown in the backyard...I'm thinking with the addition of more potatoes (instead of corn) and planting a little earlier this year I can reach my ultimate goal of 2,000lbs...

Thrifty tip of the day:

Are you out of Saran Wrap?
Well... have no fear... just use the plastic bag inside of your cereal box... with a rubber band wrapped around the bowl of course...

And when your handsome husband walks into the kitchen... and opens the gazillion dollar high maintenance suburbia frig and asks "What the wh0 is this?...What are you not buying saran wrap now? What is WRONG WITH YOU???" Just smile and say... "When you stop buying dumb man electronics I will start buying saran wrap again"... and walk away...laughing...

Ahhh... it's soo stinkin fun being frugal....some days I can hardly stand it!

  2. Mavis .. I'm very impressed with your garden and 'pet' chicken setup. How did you get around your HOA in keeping 'pet' chickens? I live in a community on 1-2 acre lots in a very rural area and am on the HOA board of directors ... and am trying to come up with a way to allow me to have a few chickens. Any help is appreciated. Your set up reminds me of 'Polyfarm' in Food,Inc. (the movie) ... did you get your idea from there? Your 'cheesy' greenhouse is perfect. We live in cold winter territory but are enjoying a mild winter.

  3. Being frugal IS fun...we love it. I like what you are doing with the chickens so much that I put up a temporary fence around last years tomato patch and let the chickens have at it.:) They send their thanks.

You know that all of this is addicting right? Pretty soon you will want a couple more chickens, another raised bed or two, a milk goat for cheese...

  5. Viki... I think my husband likes that I'm frugal...just so long as I don't talk about it to strangers... or anyone he knows :)

MamaJJ... a soda can weighs in at 1/2oz... so I only need 256,000 cans to go to Italy ($4160)...Piece of cake I tell ya... In fact I picked up 6 cans today...wait I just did the math... If I plan to go to Italy next summer.... lets say 16 months from now... I will need to collect 534 cans a day...hmmm... what else can I recycle for money? Maybe I'll look into donating blood... do they pay you for that?

Mrs. Mac... I bet your HOA states that you can have a dog, cat, or ummm let's see... A CAGED BIRD... Well I just happen to have 3 CAGED BIRDS...I'm sure it also helps that I don't have a noisy boy "Bird" aka rooster.

Mr. H...tell the chickens they are welcome... it think the "chicken fuel" is going to be a success... And FYI... I think it's about time I put in an orchard...Yep... I think that might be my next plan...

Camille... I'm glad to hear I make you laugh... tell those kids of yours to start saving their cans... I bet they could come up with something fun to spend it on :)

I LOVE comments BUT if you know who we are...due to the fact that we are currently enrolled in the international witness relocation program because of a moon shining incident in Dingle, Ireland involving 3 Mutton, a pair of red shoes and a road flare .... please do not reveal our personal information.... You know.... like names, places, or our favorite brand of toilet paper :) Hey, thanks!
