Mavis Meets Ed Hume... and a GIVEAWAY...

After printing my $2 off coupon...
I headed out to the Home & Garden Show to meet Ed...

But first... I had to stand in this very long line...

A friend of mine was a vendor at the show... so I baked him a batch of cookies earlier that morning... then the lady who was taking tickets had the NERVE TO TELL ME... "There is NO outside food allowed"... I looked at her (after she scanned my ticket) and said in true Mavis fashion... "Well, you'll just have to make an exception... because these are HOMEMADE"... and I quickly walked right in... (without looking back of course)...

I love gnomes... have I told you that before?
We are very big on gnomes in this house...
Maybe it's because the Handsome Husband is Irish...
Although he doesn't wear a pointed hat or sport a beard...
the belly though... he's working on that one...

He doesn't grow mushrooms either...
but I wish he grew these ones...

Okay... this is cute...

But $44... are you on CRACK?
Who would pay $44 for twigs?

And why on earth are they trying to sell clip on bows
for your shoes at a home and garden show?

Now this.... this could come in handy...
Maybe I could talk the Handsome Husband into this fine piece of machinery... I could tell him that I want to become a professional giant pumpkin farmer... Yahhh... he'd LOVE THAT!

Okay... Finally... Here's Ed... Mr. Ed Hume has now entered rock star status in my book...
He was sooo cool... and personable... Or maybe he was just trying to be nice to the young stalker lady in the front row who showed up 15 minutes before anybody else...
Yep, I think that's more like it...
BUT....
being Mavis has it's benefits.... like...

Getting your favorite Seed Grower to autograph a few seed packets for you...
That's right... I got Ed to sign a few packets...

1 carrot
and
1 tomato...

and if you're thinking ... Mavis that is so weird...
Why did you go and do that?

I'll tell you why...

Because I thought of you ...

See... I received 2 copies of the book Carrots love Tomato's for Christmas...

it's a great book about companion planting...

The thing is...
I don't need 2 copies of this book...

So I'm giving away my extra copy of the book along with Ed's autographed seeds...

Yep... 1 lucky reader is going to win!

All you have to do....
is answer 1 question...

Which do you like better...

Carrots...
or
Tomato's?

You cannot pick both.

I will disqualify you if you do... because I'm really mean that way.

Pick 1... carrots or tomato's...

then leave your answer in the comment section below.

A winner will be picked tomorrow afternoon.

Good Luck!

  1. Tomatoes, tomatoes, tomatoes, all the way, baby!

And did you REALLY say that bit about the homemade cookies? If so, you have just received some bonus points for character (though I don't think you were especially lacking in that department previously).

  2. How fun!! This choice is an easy one for me- tomatoes for sure. I can live without carrots. Tomatoes? I need them.

What a great book. We have vowed to be more deliberate about companion planting, but haven't done too much with it yet. Thanks, Mavis!

Oh. And did those cookies happen to be the Chewy Chocolate cookies?:-)

  3. MamaJJ... OF COURSE I said that... I would never throw away my cookies... plus the lady was like 60 years old... so I knew I could take her down :)

Thyahnd...YES... I thought about linking it back to you BUT I DO THAT ALL THE TIME... and did not want to appear like a recipe stalker :)

  4. I am so jealous, I would have loved to listen to Ed Hume speak...lucky you. Perhaps you could bring a camcorder with the next time you go to one of these cool shows. Anyway, and this is a tough decision, I would have to pick carrots. I'm pretty sure I would experience withdrawal symptoms without my daily dose of carrots.

    Shoe Bows?

  5. I'm gonna go with tomatoes...but never raw right from the garden. I know, ODD right? They remind me of pimples & scare the crap outta me. Instead I make soup, salsa, stewed tomatoes, diced, and even feed some to my African Hingeback tortoise.

  7. Ed Hume? YAWN. My grandparents were big Ed Hume fans back in the day. ;)

So when is Ciscoe appearing? I'd totally go see Ciscoe.

I've been busy commenting on all your blog friends' blogs today...hope you're not jealous.

  8. I like carrot colored tomatoes. My answer is tomatoes. Good for you blatantly whisking in those homemade cookies.

  9. Definitely tomatoes. they are just too versitile. Did I spell that right?

By the way, I'm JJ's cousin and I'm so sad that I, too, don't live in VA because I'd love to meet you when you visit her :)

  10. Tomatoes. Both sweet and savory, juicy and meaty. And I am enamored with the varieties.

  11. it's tomatoes -

I'd love the book - it does it tell you how to get a companion to help with the garden, right? also, thanks for posting the twig-wreath photo - i had no idea how valuable my brushpile was.

  12. Mr.H...

Kathy... you are the first person I've ever heard of that doesn't like raw tomatoes... interesting...what's the tortoise's name?

    Amy... Tomatoes rock!

K... Did you ever try my carrot cake> Yummy! I'll make it next time your around :)

Tori... Ciscoe will be doing a few talks at the Seattle Flower & Garden show on Early February in Seattle...it cost's $20 to get in... plus parking...

Mrs Mac... next time I will just stuff the cookies in my purse... or if I'm feeling feisty then I will bake like 5 dozen and walk in with a platter...we'll see.

Zoe: Last I heard JJ was getting a band and planning a giant doughnut party for my arrival... I'm sure your invited... and I bet you can stay at her house for free too... maybe she just hasn't sent out the invites yet :)

Jen... I think my favorite is Japanese Black Trifel from seedsavers.org

Po' Pharmer... Sadly NO... the book does not come with a companion to help with the garden... but if you are looking to recruit little ones for garden chores I highly suggest using the old "buried treasure" trick... You know... dig a hole and throw in a small toy or two... then see if you can get them to dig up the rest of the yard for you...As for your brushpile...I'd rent a booth down at the farmer's market and sell some twig wreaths... even at half price it would be a great money maker...

  14. I may just have to get a package of those. It's starting time here in a few weeks though the snow will stick around for a couple more months. I might also have to see if the library or Half Price Books store has a copy of that book.

I LOVE comments BUT if you know who we are...due to the fact that we are currently enrolled in the international witness relocation program because of a moon shining incident in Dingle, Ireland involving 3 Mutton, a pair of red shoes and a road flare .... please do not reveal our personal information.... You know.... like names, places, or our favorite brand of toilet paper :) Hey, thanks!
