A lovely day for garden work...

The garlic is coming up like crazy...

It was so nice outside today that I re-stained the top of the potting bench...

The Shasta daisy's are coming up nicely... these typically grow about 4 ft tall by the end of summer...

It looks like the raspberries are making a comeback this year too...
Hopefully I will get enough to make a batch of jam this year...

The girls free ranged a little today...

I spy with my little eye... rhubarb...
I bought 2 or 3 plants last year at the farmers market...
and now... they are coming back... how cool is that?

I also finished weeding the strawberry patch...
Two garden boxes is plenty for us...

So I gathered up the pulled plants and dead brown leaves...

And I used them as mulch at the base of a very tall pine tree...
The thing with strawberries is...once you have them... you cannot
get ride of them... I wonder if they will start to grow here too...

Oh... and the highlight of my day (besides scoring a free cream of wheat cereal sample)
was planting some peas. YEP...I sure did... you got the memo right? Winter is over? I usually plant my peas on St. Patrick's day... but just for fun I planted 1 packet (left over from last year) today. It's been around 50 degrees during the day around here lately... It's probably too early to plant...

But I thought I'd give creepy gnome guy something to look forward to
and plant them anyway...

Then I placed a fabric cover over the garden bed...
and went inside and took a nap...

This has been Mavis... reporting live... from the garden gate.

  1. your garden looks great!!! i'm on vancouver island and up a mountain a bit.. my rhubarb is just poking it's nose out, the garden, which is all raised beds, is just too darn wet for planting anything...sighhhh can't wait to get 'at it' :D

  2. Oh it has been so "spring-ish" lately, hasn't it? We west coast people get very excited when we see a little sun! Looks like you got bit by the same bug as me. Although, it doesn't inspire me to plant ~ I wear flip flops and short sleeves. :) I do however have a great desire to dry clothes on the line....does that count for something??

  3. nice setup .. and to be out and about in the garden in Feb. Our ground is frozen still about two inches down below the mud.

  4. It seems odd to be able to SEE the ground. We have a good two and a half feet of snow right now. Spring seems very, very, very far away:-(.

  5. Lucky chickens.:) The strawberry patch will bless you for your efforts this summer and I would be willing to bet the ones around the tree do indeed re-root. Fresh rhubarb pie, sauce, or crisp coming soon...lucky Mavis. We divided ours this last summer and turned our 4 plants into many more...I have no idea what we will do with it all.

  6. Roasted Garlicious...I know... I can barely stand it... I'm ready to start planting...I so deeply need the distraction... and busy work that comes with the whole growing your own food deal :)

Camille...it DOES feel like spring... I don't think we are going to get any snow this year...

Mrs. Mac...I think I would get cabin fever real quick if I wasn't able to go outside and plant something... Snow is nice... for a few days... but frozen soil? No thanks... hopefully it thaws out soon for you :)

Thyhand...We have never had 2 1/2 feet of snow here... now that would be a sight to see...

Mr. H...I too have no idea what I am going to do with all that rhubarb... BUT I noticed in the Fred Meyer ad that King Crab legs are on sale this week for $6.99lb... be sure and tell Mrs. H!

I LOVE comments BUT if you know who we are...due to the fact that we are currently enrolled in the international witness relocation program because of a moon shining incident in Dingle, Ireland involving 3 Mutton, a pair of red shoes and a road flare .... please do not reveal our personal information.... You know.... like names, places, or our favorite brand of toilet paper :) Hey, thanks!
