Walla Walla Onions...

Well...
I can't take it anymore!
I'm declaring winter over...
That's it... no more winter...
you hear that...huh??

So today... I was at the local grocery... and I finished picking up the rest of my garden seeds for 2010...well, all but one packet that is... I couldn't find the compact gold nugget squash seeds from Ed Hume... but I have 2 other stores to check before the end of May...*plus*... I'm hoping to see Mr. Ed Hume himself ... at the home and garden expo coming up...He's giving a few talks on gardening...and I'm hoping to catch one of them... So, I'll ask him where's he's hiding all those gold nugget squash seeds...I can't plant the squash seeds til the end of May anyway... so I figure I still have a little time...

On today's agenda... Walla Walla Onions...

Simply ... in my book... the best sweet onion on the planet...
not that I've tried them all... but these are my favorite.
Since we gobbled up all our onions last year... I've been buying our winter onions from Costco lately... Well... hopefully not much longer... according to the seed packet... I should be biting into a homegrown onion in about 110 days...I can't wait...well...actually I'm going to have to wait aren't I?

Plus...what's so great about this time a year is that I get to make the handsome husband super crazy by filling every possible windowsill with seedling trays...it's kinda fun...and payback for me having to listen to his really loud football/baseball...sport of the month... blaring on the dumb t.v all year long... I keep telling him the t.v. is making him deaf...but he keeps yelling "What? I can't hear you..."

But don't worry about me...I've already prepared myself for his rude comments this year...
When he tells me we can't invite anyone over because of all the crap growing in the windowsills... I'm gonna say... "What? I can't hear you"...right back at him...
Ahhh... the joys of marriage...

*******

How about you? Has the planting bug bit you yet?

  1. We've started planning- I'm going to post about it today- but not yet planting:-). About those onions...did you try to store any? Do you know if they store well?? We're looking for a different variety.

  2. Thyhand...sadly, I don't think they store that well...but they are yummy! I received an Amazon.com gift card and I used it to buy MORE seeds...and one of them is red onion that is suppose to over winter well...so hopefully the red ones will work out. How long did your braided onions last?

  3. I am so NOT motivated to even think about gardening. It's on my list of things to do, but I'm dreading it. Give me another month and I'll be itching to get out there, I'm sure...I hope...

  4. Our onions two years ago did really well through mid-late winter. Last year, we planted the same amount and they didn't do well at all amount-wise. Jamey is on the hunt. We'll find something:-).

  5. Walla walla onions are my favorite as well. We have never had much luck growing them but will keep trying...one of these years they will do good for us.

If Ed doesn't come through for you let me know I stocked up on some extra Gold Nugget seed packets last year. I like Ed Hume seeds, not only are they very reasonable in price (and always on sale at Fred Meyer) but seem to germinate really well for us.

  6. Yes - it is time for winter to be over. I'm going to have to wait for some of this snow to melt before I can start thinking about planting anything, though...

I LOVE comments BUT if you know who we are...due to the fact that we are currently enrolled in the international witness relocation program because of a moon shining incident in Dingle, Ireland involving 3 Mutton, a pair of red shoes and a road flare .... please do not reveal our personal information.... You know.... like names, places, or our favorite brand of toilet paper :) Hey, thanks!
